2017 Motorcycle Adventure to Alaska (Day ten)

I have to say this “land of the midnight sun” stuff takes some getting used to. I have struggled since leaving Canmore to get a good nights sleep due I think to the fact that it stays light out till 10:30 or so and comes up who knows when. I woke this morning at 4:30 am and it was already light out.
There is a lot of mining and gas related industry along the highway along with constant road construction. When it rains the dirt on the road turns to mud so the wheel spray off cars and trucks will coat your vehicle in minutes. Here is my freshly washed bike after an hour on the Alaska Hwy. following some rain.

Shortly after getting out on the road again I encountered this sign with a couple of reminders. I had forgotten that this is actually the 75th anniversary of the Alaska Hwy. It’s also the 150th anniversary of Canada.

I t was another gorgeous day and I was making good time out of Fort St. John when I my first of many road construction delays. I was the first vehicle stopped so I had a nice chat with the flag girl. She said it would be awhile and to turn off my motor. By the time the pilot truck showed up there were four of us bikers all standing around swapping stories.

I noticed my gas level was getting low and pulled into this gas station and restaurant that wasn’t like anything I’d seen before. The gas station part is a self serve portable unit that even has accredit card pay feature. Needing a restroom I went into the restaurant which was actually pretty cool. The people were very friendly and one old guy asked me where I was headed on that Cadillac, referring to my bike and trailer.

Around noon I was really struggling to stay awake and decided to stop and have a drink and a snack. Although I still hadn’t seen any animals I was always vigilant to any bears that might be close by.

The terrain was changing and now I’m in the foothills and lush deep valleys.

The weather is good but a little on the cool side so I decided to try out my new heated jacket liner. OMG. This thing is incredible. I turned it on high and it got very warm, very fast. It actually startled me.
This liner really came in handy as I climbed up to Summit Lake Provincial Campground. My site is a real gem of a find, snow capped mountains, small lake flowing into a babbling brook……..perfect.

I did a nice video but the internet here is very slow so I will try to add it once I get to some high speed in Whitehorse.

Sweet Dreams
