2017 Motorcycle Adventure to Alaska (Day eleven)

I am so glad that I decided to purchase a new sleeping bag because last night was down in the single digits centigrade so I was warm as toast all night despite the cold.
Once I was on my way I realized just how beautiful the geography had become over the past 24 hours. Here are a few shots I took shortly after leaving my campsite at Summit Lake.

Because I wasn’t near a fuel stop when I stopped the night before I noticed my gas guage showed only half full so I was really hoping to find a gas station soon. Toad River Lodge to the rescue. Like many gas stations up here they have very old pumps where you pay inside and there is generally a line as you wait your turn to gas up. Yesterday I had met three other bikers at that construction stop. One of them on a Harley three wheeler named Ed happened to be stopped at the same station . Neither one of us had had our morning dose of coffee so after gasing the bikes we went inside for a cup. That’s Ed in the “pirate outfit”. Notice all the thousands of hats that line the ceiling. I guess this is another one of those querky joints that add flavor to this area.

Every so often I would stop for a photograph and Ed would keep riding knowing that I would eventually catch up to him.

I’m not sure where they were all hiding but today there was wildlife everywhere. I have some awesome videos of buffalo, bear and mountain goats but the wifi in Whitehorse is so slow even at Starbucks that it would literally take hours to upload them. A single 48 second video would take approx. an hour and a half so I will keep them for sharing when I return.

When we finally reached Watkins Lake, Yukon, Ed decided to pack it in for the night and booked into a local hotel.

He hails from Alberta and he and his wife had planned this trip together but unfortunately she passed away two months ago so he’s making the trip in her honor. He shared that he has rectal cancer and has a colostomy bag so riding long distances becomes painful for him. His plan is to leave for Whitehorse in the morning where he will stay with a close friend. We asked a passerby to take our picture . We hope to meet up in the morning and ride together to Whitehorse.
I must have picked up a cold bug because what I thought was a dry throat from all the construction dust turned out to be a genuine cold. Another rough night with frequent wake ups for nose blowing. The timing sucks but I am going to enjoy myself regardless.
