Salinas is very close to the coast so when I awoke I was enveloped in a cold fog, what the locals call the marine layer. The camper and bike were dripping with water even though it hadn't rained. A young Chinese family next to me was fascinated by my camper as I packed up and headed north on the 101. Wanting to save time I gassed up, got a quick breakfast at the "golden arches" and hit the road. I hadn't gone far when I burst out of the fog into the warming rays of the morning sun.
The 2 1/2 hour ride put me in Sebastopol right on the dot of noon and Daniel was at his "office" (Starbucks) waiting for my arrival. It was great to see him again and he looked much better and healthier than my last visit a couple years ago.
We hung out there, had an iced coffee and caught up a bit. He was hungry as he'd not had any breakfast so we went to another one of his haunts, The Hopmonk, and had a bite to eat. I'm not sure where the time went but around 3:30 he told me he had a meeting that would run until 6:30 so I'm back at Starbucks so I can take advantage of their wifi and get caught up on my blog.
When I visit Daniel one issue that always seems to be ever present is where I will sleep. Daniel's meeting was to negotiate a living arrangement for late August after he returns from an economics conference in Ottawa.
We had agreed to meet at K & L Bistro at 6:30 for a drink and to figure out where I was going to sleep. He showed up 35 minutes late but we had our drinks and he had a plan. By this time we were both getting rather peckish so it was back to Hopmonk. It was Friday night and this place was getting set up for a big night of live music and dancing with hundreds of young people gathering in their outside dining area.
It turned out that Daniel had secured a spot for my camper in the front yard of his good friend, Dick Noble. It was a three mile ride in the dark out to this very rural area in the middle of vineyards and stately eucalyptus trees. Daniel held my flashlight and he and Dick watched me setup my camper in the dark amazed as the tent seemingly grew out of trailer. Once done we agreed to meet in the morning at Starbucks and Daniel was off, back to town. I climbed into bed , read a few chapters of my latest Kindle book and then it was lights out.
