Around 11:00 am I headed out again and rode straight to the pier at Santa Monica. Why? This is the official end point for Route 66, the Mother Road as it's sometimes referred to. I had to get a photo before heading up the coast on the back half of this adventure.
By now I've probably ridden the equally famous Hwy. 1 coastal road up through Big Sur to Frisco many times but you can't ride the slab when this epic twisty is right there.
The weather changes rather dramatically at this time of year as you go from a few miles in land to the coast. It actually clouds up and gets chilly, sometimes even down right cold.
I began to notice signs at the entrance to several coastal camp grounds that told me they were full. I began to get a little worried because camp grounds are not all that plentiful along certain stretches. I got to San Luis Obispo and found the KOA. Oddly enough they only cater to RV's. I tried another place next door but they didn't cater to anything with wheels. I wasn't a tent or an RV so I had to keep looking. I eventually found a spot at Morro Bay State Park. It was crowded but they had a couple of sites left.
Whenever I go to one of these places and set up my camper it tends to draw a lot of attention. Nobody has ever seen a camper towed by a motorcycle. I must have had four different families come over just to look inside and ask me where I got it, where I'm from etc. I could be a great sales rep. for the camper company. Perhaps I should approach them about a commission arrangement for my next year's adventure.
I cooked up some soup for dinner and lay down around 8:30 pm just to rest and listen to some music. I must have been very tired because I woke up at 10:30 pm so I got undressed and climbed into my sleeping bag and went to sleep all over again.
Maybe you could get sponsorship from the camper company and they could paint an ad on the side of it or something? Sounds like a plan!
