When I woke at 7:30 am and walked out of the camper the air was filled with smoke from a major forest fire just northeast of the camp site. It was a bit creepy as water tanker planes were going over head to dump water and fire retardant. Not having wifi I decided to have a quick breakfast, get packed up and get to a wifi hotspot to post my blog. Just a note to my followers, if I don't always get my blog done on a regular basis, don't worry about me because it's just a lack of internet service and I will eventually get caught up. This applies to emails and messages also.
Today was pretty uneventful. I rode south away from the fire to Bear Lake, a very popular spot for water recreation enthusiasts. I stopped at this spot and took the photo of the Historical Marker on one side of the road and on the other was the Lake.
It's just hard for me to comprehend the struggles of early settlers getting covered wagons over these treacherous mountain passes.
Shortly after the above shot was taken the road turned west and began the climb over the mountains to Salt Lake City. As I climbed I looked back and got this nice shot of the Bear Lake below with the distant hills in the distance.
The mountain road was great fun as it shifted back and forth around the topographical features. As I descended into the Salt Lake basin the temperature really shot up so by rush hour in Salt Lake City it had hit 41'C (just under 106'F). Despite heavy rush hour traffic I was able to breeze through it all with relative ease due to their HOV lanes (High Occupancy Vehicle) which also apply to buses and motorcycles.
I decided to shoot for another KOA near Provo, Utah which would position me well for tomorrow when I plan to explore Zion and Bryce National Parks. If the weather holds I'm hoping for some spectacular photo ops.
