I woke up this morning at 6:45 am and couldn't get back to sleep but I lay there and did manage to sleep on and off for another couple of hours. I was still tired but got up anyway and prepared my breakfast. The day looked good weather wise but still very humid. After a shower I felt much better and got out of Oklahoma City by 11:00 am which was much later than is my habit. Heading west I hoped to make it to Amarillo, Texas by late afternoon. The weather changed dramatically. The humidity had finally settled down and the wind had shifted to the north. I did run into a brief bit of rain but it didn't last long. The terrain in western Oklahoma and the panhandle of Texas is pretty flat with very little vegetation so not the most interesting geography. I got to Amarillo just after 4:00 pm and decided to go visit an old friend. David Brown was one of my Honda dealers back in the mid 90's and we shared a relationship beyond business. He's now 74 and still running his pride and joy dealership. It was so much fun to just walk into his office and say hello as if the last 20 years hadn't happened. We sat there in his office just shootin' the shit and he filled me in on all the dirt since I left mother Honda.
It was getting late so I said goodbye and headed down the road to the nearest KOA campground. It didn't look much when I got there but it turned out to be just fine. After getting my camper set up and preparing a nice bowl of soup for dinner I strolled around the camp site and came across a mother and her 12 year old daughter from New York out camping on their own. This isn't a common sight so I was intriqued to learn more. She was headed to California like me and was camping along the way taking in all the sights as kind of an education for her daughter. I was impressed.
I didn't take many photos today because there wasn't much that caught my eye. Here's a couple of shots of my Amarillo campsite.
I'm not sure why I took the last shot but I'd never see, a row of real functioning fire hydrants in a field before.
The real scenery starts tomorrow as I get into Northern New Mexico and Santa Fe.
